2. Scheek Fool- Goldfinger

3. I Dig You- Cult Hero

4. Purple Beats- Dynamix II

5. Masterpiece- Gazebo

5/1/10
so, the red light CD is out... however only available currently in japan... info, art, tracklistings, and a sound sample are here
also, we are having a CD release party for it at Botanica on Sat. May 15 w/ guest DJ's and old Red Light buddies Teeth, Shakewell, and Duckcomb playing funky rock and disco all night... CD's will be available for 5 bucks a pop...

4/12/10 top 5
1. trim-monkey, from Trim City mixtape... not the most consistant thing, well to me, Trim has not put out a consistantly GREAT mixtape since Soulfood vol 1, but this song is amazing:

2. maxta- east london is back... sorta old track, but priming me up for his mixtape... sick danny weed beat

3. tinchy stryder and dirty dangerous... not the strongest song from tinchy's new free DL mixtape, but shit, they made a video... the entire mixtape is great, esp. the track produced by silencer (maybe the best beat i've heard from him...)

4. D double E- Bad to the Bone... best thing i've heard on the Woo riddim...

5. el michels affair- enter the 37th chamber LP... sort of a hard record for me to resist...

4/10/10 nice little bit of blog press here...

3/25/10 quick news update... guested on Small Change's pledge drive show on WFMU. Check it here. I start at around 2:26, for the non-patient... What else? My Proto-Disco mix with Reaganomics is getting pressed up right now, so check back soon for paypal links and whatnot...

1/10/10 Please note the "MIXES" section in the top right hand corner of this page has been updated.

Just got back from Morocco and Spain, so stuff like this is ruling my world:

top 5, on the club music ting...
1. P-Money- Left the Room ... sick grimey dubstep
2. Anything by Lil Silva... I know, I know...
3. Wiley- Take That (Boy Better Know Vs. Fire Camp remix) fun electro nonsense with a nice appearence by Scratchy, who's been MIA for a minute...
4. Cheb Bilal and Group Fnaire- Bladi ...nice mix of Algerian Rai singing and Moroccan rapping... over 140 bpm, expect to hear this in my grime/dubstep sets...
5. the entire Blaqkout LP by DJ Quik and Kurupt... some real next level stuff, or at least what an old man like me wants hip hop to sound like circ now... personally i think the lead single "9 times out of 10" is one of the weaker tracks on there, sounds like a knockoff of "grindin'", so don't judge the LP if you've just heard the single...

What's up with Tinchy Stryder being totally famous in England for making fairly terrible Euro-pop? serious Boney M bizness for the noughts... and what is this "Brapp Pack" the Sun speaks of? And when is Lil Vicious going to be known as the godfather of the Brapp Pack?

Below is the cover for a mix CD Reaganomics and I have done... should be available in the next three weeks...

10/2/09 man, have not updated this for a while... ok, how about a quick Top 5...
1. Raekwon- Cuban Linx 2 ...as good as a sequel to Cuban Linx as we could expect to hear in 2009... a solid, listenable record that somehow makes sense as the sequel to a classic...
2. Ghostface- Wizard of Poetry... Ghost's R&B record... sans Autotune of course, but not a 70's slow jam museum piece either... went to the record release party for this last week... insane... U-God, Jadakiss, Redman, Large Professor, and Kid Cudi all made on stage cameo's. When Jada came out, I kinda lost it:

3. Legeti- Complete Works... got turned on thru the "2001" soundtrack... just amazing textures... uneasy music...
4. The Rugbys- You, I... the sort of psych I like... fuzzy and funky garage business...
5. Juicy J - Purple Kush... project pat's screwed verse,oh my....

big things in the pipe, i promise...

3/17/09 WTF?

3/12/09 a track i produced was featured on Dutty Artz's Jah Dan mix for XLR8R magazine... you can check it out here...

3/7/09 upcoming DJ gig. this will be fun and i will be bringing out all sorts of french langauage jams both obscure and beloved...

1/21/09 i am djing this saturday jan 24 at Rubulad, going all night trading off with my friends Count Zero and Four Eyes. Rubulad is a loft party in Brooklyn... it's my birthday... hit me up for info, etc...

1/10/09 Top 5

1. Next Hype - Tempa T ...best grime track i've heard in ages... the track is great, and the vocal is indeed hype... makes you wanna punch people...

you can see Tempz perform the song in front of the Acropolis (i think? I dunno, my ancient ruins game is weak) over Maniac's "Full Effect" beat:

2. Yes- Lil Wayne feat. Pharrell. Definitely a "huh" moment for dubstep. This track is produced by Pharrell and for all intents and purposes it IS dubstep. I mean, it doesn't sound like every single sound has been painstakingly sweated over and EQed to death like most dubstep does, but besides that, all the sonic hallmarks of dubstep are there (ie. WOBBLES). Makes me wish I was doing some mainstream club DJing right now, just to see how it would go over.

3. Angry Garden Gnone dub- Wiley ...part 1 of Wiley's 3 part attack on Durrty Goodz. Glad to see grime get a little fire going. And Wiley puts out his best music when's he's pissed off about something. None of these dubs are as good as his Nightbus dubplate against the Movement, taken as a whole, these are pretty good... Both Wiley and Durrty Goodz sling mud at each other re: drug use, murder, underage sex, familial betrayl, and the state of their respective careers. A decent overview is here. You can download all 5 (yes, five) dubs here.

4. Get Up and Dance- The Earls ...great funky disco from 1976 that's been killing it for me lately...

5. The Law is for Protection of the People- Kris Kristofferson. ...a great record from dad's collection... funky country tune... (pre-Streisand version or Taxi Driver steez)

12/20/08 i have an album out on my friend Flex's net label Black Rhombus. You can download it here

or listen here

here are the liner notes:

So Intelligent is a journey from the beginning of life to the end, with all the ups and downs of the human experience included along the way. Every step of man's passage from the womb to the tomb is delivered in shocking and lurid living color.

For an ideal listening experience, position your chair between the speakers or if possible wear headphones (note: we neither endorse, recommend, nor condone listening to So Intelligent while wearing those dinky little pieces of shit that come with your Ipod). Let the pure essence of the condition of mankind envelope you like a coconut flavored bodywash (note: do not drink the bodywash).

Thrill to hearing the detritus of 20th century recorded culture reworked and re-imagined into the embodiment of our current day and age (yet, remarkably timeless as well!). Remember that you as a human being experience the same thoughts, dreams, and emotions as your ancestors did untold millennia ago. Let the universal vibration of music take you back to that primal time and place where you felt yourself first gestate as a unique force in this universe.

But, remember that life is a many pronged journey upon thousands of possible paths, with untold toils, troubles, and temptations along the way. The vilest evil that could ever be inflicted upon a human being was done not by the gods or by fate, but by his fellow man. As we huddle cold, against the dark unknown, we blindly flail about for answers. Why was I put here? What should I do with myself? Who will instruct me? Where should I go? How will I get there? While this record does not promise to hold the answers to ALL of those questions, we certainly (when pressed) will admit that a small portion of the True Universal Truth will be revealed to you if you approach the sounds contained within with the proper and appropriate mindset. It contains little in the way of direct linear communication (only one song has proper lyrics as such), yet if you allow the primal part of your brain (the limbic system, known as the "lizard brain") to intuitively take in the messages conveyed therein, I believe you will be pleasantly surprised. It's sort of like that Spaceship Earth ride at Epcot Center, but way radder.

11/15/08 Slackk over at Grimetapes.com has compiled a Best of Wiley pirate radio compilation. Yup, over 45 minutes of Wiley's crazed radio appearences on London's famed Rinse FM (among others), all given humorous titles like "been doing this since i pissed in a potty", "if you know wiley, you know i'm a ninja", "look clearly i was chosen", and "suck your mum, soundboy." Sound quality varies, but chances are your favorite Wiley bars are here, though I wished they included some banter from his infamous God's Gift dis show, where he addresses "London" as if it's his friend from down the road: "Hey, Hey London, you know what this boy is doing?" Regardless, true quality stuff that captures the genius and personability of Wiley better than any of his albums to date have. In general, there is a magic to hearing grime on pirate radio tapes that is simply never captured on record. There is an immediacy and a suggestion of an almost jazz-like off the cuff improvisation to grime pirate radio; a feeling that anything could happen. In these tapes you hear Wiley as an MC in its original meaning: a master of ceremonies presiding over a London that he claims as his kingdom.

10/27/08 had a wonderful weekend selling records at the WFMU fair and seeing Harvey Scales at the 5 Spot... lot of heads out at both locations it was cool to run into... i also Djed on WFMU recently on my friend Small Change's show... check it here i start two hours in...

also, i did an "around the world" mix a few months back... thought i'd put it up... check it here Stuff ranging from Hong Kong Soundtrack bubblegum funk, Quebecois freak outs, Mexican hippie funk, Brazilian Tropicalia, Bollywood Dub courtesy Lee Perry, NYC spaced out disco, and much more...

9/6/08 Clean and Humble Radio (my radio show with Flex Unger) is now up as podcast archives...

check it... also, hear it live on www.viva-radio.com mondays from 8-9pm EST or at www.viva-radio.com/cleanandhumble

8/8/08 just been reminded that i haven't updated in a while, sorry been on myspace and whatnot, so here goes... i saw Goran Bregovic at Lincoln Center last month... that was totally amazing, i was worried it was going to be somehow unfun, as it was in Lincoln Center, but people flooded the aisles and were dancing the whole time... a great atmosphere and a great show... a release of energy like going to HC shows back in the day used to be...

and for everyone trying to draw a Gogel Bordello comparision, yeah yeah... Gogol Bordello certainly puts on an amazing show, but they just don't have songs as good as Bregovic... i remember when i used to go see the singer from Gogel Bordello DJ at the Bulgarian club on Broadway and Canal back in 2000 and all he played was Goran Bregovic records!

Pure Fire has been going well at APT... much respect to Baltimore King Scottie B for killing it in July and for Cx Kidtronik for doing the same yesterday... more to come...

also, i urge everyone to check out the French Film Noir series at Film Forum this month... lotta sick films...

6/25/08 just checking in to say my French music blog has been updated...

4/25/08 FILM NOIR NEWS!

"blast of silence" just got issued on DVD...

i saw it about 10 years about at a film noir festival and it really stuck w/ me...

first, because it was made 1961, it's WAY past my film noir cut-off (i cannot stand Kiss Me Deadly because it is SOOOOOOOOOO 50's and bourgeoise...), yet is it so fucking dark and urban. It is all filmed in NYC right when urban decay was beginning...

second, because it was so obviously the work of one man... Alllen Baron wrote it, directed it, and starred in it; total indie film thing...

third, becuase it seemed very influenced by the French new wave (particluarly Goddard's Breathless), which is funny as the French new wave was very influenced by American film noir!

But, the idea of a film about a criminal, complete with a low key "boring" middle section involving romance and woman and the dialogue therein is exactly out of Breathless... Shit, but not to give the movie away, but it even ends like Breathless... remove the French post-modernism and STYLE and add pure NYC dirt.grit.and.blood. and you get BLAST OF SILENCE.

i am curious as if he was familiar with Cassavete's "Shadows", as they have alot in common. Now, don't get it twisted, one is a Hollywood gangster pic and one is a underground sketch, but they have alot MORE in common with each other than they do with any other movies that came out between 59-61...

Oh AND WILEY - "WEARING MY ROLEX" = at number 4 in the UK... so funny... i mean this man has made so much amazing fucking music and yet an electro song makes every douchebag in England knows who he is...

3/16/08

1. ruff sqwad- ruff sqwad man dem- the return of grime vinyl, and in fine form... for a group that started out as youngers, Ruff Sqwad are the grand old men of grime at this point (roll deep = MIA, in truth...). video below, plus the b-side is "xtra", a/k/a the best grime posse cut ever, never before on wax... the other track on this is the instro for a track on the CD below...

2. tinchy stryder- cloud 9 EP ...EP is def. the move for grime these days, since Durrty Goodz put out the Axiom EP... cut out the fat and leave the meat, yunno? i mean, i remember the pre-cd days when rap albums had 12 tracks not 22, so for me 9 tracks IS an album... stateside cats can cop at the applecore shop.

3. the kinks- misty water ...from "the great lost kinks album", a record i had been hoping for many years to stumble upon for 6.99 in the "K" bin of some podunk record store. this never did happen, but i was quite happy to pay 15 bucks for it in greenpoint. the chord progession to this tune is simply amazing, another testement to the enduring genius of ray davies...

4. wiley- nightbus dubplate... this is an old track at this point, but some days i think it is the best grime vocal track ever.

5. waylon jennings- the house of the rising sun... best version EVER

i am playing french music in W'Burg on April 2nd. Please come down, as I am going to pull out all the stops and bring everything from Quebecois beat group 45's to French punk... spinning with me is Melody Nelson from East Village radio...

2/5/08 much thanks to DJ Wonder and Unit One for a great great show at APT. Wonder played probably the best grime/dubstep set I've seen, a great integration of both genres. Much respect.

1. High Times- mc5 ...the last MC5 record (and the last one i needed)... for some reason, i got all aghast when people would claim it was the best MC5 record, mainly it because the rock critic hype machine somehow left this album behind. I can see why people hype up "Kick Out the Jams", it's a wonderful live album filled with energy, revolutionary jargon, curse words, and proto-punk energy. However, they don't quite pull off a lot of the free jazz experimentalism they aspire to. The more I listen to "High Times", the more I realize Jon Landau was a humungus douchebag for emasculating their sound on their second LP "Back in the USA." It has no low end at all and just doesn't punch you in the face. Now, "High Times" is really and truly their best album. Heavy, experimental, and funky without being contrived.

2. Get Up, Stand Up- vein feat. Pitbull ...love the bassline sound, not too crazy about the faux-daft punk chorus vocals. Still, a great beat with a forward looking sound.

3. Wearing my Rolex- Wiley ...wiley goes elecro-house, a la Bodyrox... cute...

4. Body- Secret Agent Gel feat. Warrior Queen... really great nasty dubstep business...

5. When She Was Bad- Diesler ...great great tune that somehow combines latin vibes and mutant basslines in a way that does not sound contrived...

1/14/08 Pure Fire returns...

I am really excited about this. Wonder produced two of my fav underrated grime songs "What" (a/k/a "respect me" by Dizzee Rascal), and his remix of Hype Hype by SLK. He was definitely one of the first people to have a production style that straddled the difference between grime and dubstep. Much respect to Unit One for bringing him over...

1/9/08 i saw kilsug last week at club midway. they are a sort of post-hardcore punk doom rock band from boston, active in the early 80's. uh, bands they sound like? flipper? the melvins? my first exposure to them was to their "Mach 2" band, Upsidedown Cross, in the 7th or 8th grade. They were what all the fucked up deliquent skateboard kids in my junior high listened to... i then got "This Boston, Not LA" a few years later on CD reissue, which contains material from the Gronoids, who are kinda like Pre-Kilslug... Bored yet?

Anyways, Kilslug's LP "Answer the Call" is a sludge masterpiece I was definitely psyched to hear that they were playing. They had played Boston on Halloween, but I had to work and couldn't make it.

Anyways, Psycho opened and they were awesome. Their split 7" w/ Anal Cunt is one of my prized possesions, so it was really cool to finally see them live. Total nasty fucking grindcore business.

Anyways, so yeah, Kilslug lived up to my expectations. They played "Red Devil", "Into a Hole", and "Make it Rain", which are my 3 favorite tracks... John Kozik from Anal Cunt was a suprisenly good bass player. Larry Lifeless was as crazy as was to be expected. He had a cordless jigsaw and was cutting the heads off of 3 foot plastic saint statues. Grisley. Some dopey punkers and hipsters (Larry: "Fuck you, you fuckin' yuppie!") kept getting too close to Larry so he was waving the saw at them... ooof. Then some fat dude with a red mohawk kicked one of the statues so Larry jumped off stage and started whaling on the poor bastard. Mayhem, mayhem, mayhem. Haven't seen a nasty punk show like that in a while and it was surreal to see a 50 year old dude being the one handing out the beatings. Kilslug... see 'em if they come to your town...

1/2/07 i am playing punk rock records with Mr. Pat Longo on Saturday Jan 5 at DC's Tavern in Hoboken, a/k/a, the best bar in the tri-state area... i promise to play:

1. Oi Oi Oi- Cockney Rejects
2. All Murder, All Guts, All Fun- Samhain
3. Sheila- the Outlets
4. Innocents- John Cooper Clarke
5. Jilted John- Jilted John

also, on the BUY BUY BUY tip, anyone in the UK can purchase both my grime/crunk blends record and the latest Pure Fire mix from juno.co.uk

11/30/07 a quick review of Wiley's show at the Knitting Factory last week:

my two cents, not trying to diss anyone involved, much respect for putting the work in... that said...

the dj's and mc's before MRK 1 and Wiley were pretty terrible... whoever the asian indie-rock MC was, he was terrible... just really really bad... i don't mean to be nasty, but he really had no business being on stage... i was up in the balcony wondering why i was there...

the turn out was pretty bad... i don't know if this is b/c the people doing this were from Texas not NYC, the fact that it was the day after Thanksgiving, or just a general cool down on the hype that grime had a few years back, but the place was only about 1/4 full, compared to the Roll Deep show from two or three years ago that was sold out... things got a bit better when Keith P started spinning some grime... he dropped Sidewinder and people got open... i think he should have just dropped a full set of grimey stuff, but he sounded good...

MRK 1 and his boys were ok... i was never a big Virus Syndicate fan, but they had their moments... for lower level dudes, they had one or two good bars and MRK 1 def has a few bangers (albeit monotinous ones)... they were techinal problems thru most of their set, tho, leading to the Coki Marijuana refix being played for like 10 minutes straight (got the biggest response of the night) Serato strikes again! basically the technical problems dragged down a set that was only going OK to begin with...

Wiley came on and performed to a pre-sequenced track, reminding me of seeing hip hop shows in the early 90's when people came out and performed with a DAT tape... I have to say, having no DJ fucks up the flow, especially with grime... no rewinds, no changes, no pauses, no funny Wiley chatter...

anyways, yeah, he performed to one big long track, that to his credit, he had obviously put a lot of time into laying out... some songs he performed all of, others were cut after one verse, going directly into another, like a pre-arranged mix... he did alot of songs from Playtime is Over, like Bow E3, My Mistakes, Gangsters, Eskiboy, 50/50, and No Qualms...

the two songs i was most psyched to hear him do (and was def not expecting to hear ) were Sorry, Sorry, Pardon What (people kinda went nuts it, which i did not expect) and Jack's Not Nimble... let's see, Nightbus dubplate was sick and he did quite a few things I didn't recognize, although I am not caught up on anything after Tunnel Vision 5... all in all a good setlist and a very long set, one of the logest i have seen a solo MC do in a while... plus, he barely had any resting time, with the pre-sequenced backing track and all... the minuses were he barely engaged the crowd, just paced the stage; it was like watching someone shadowbox... little eye contact, banter, or stage show... also, he seemed a little tired and his flow was definitely not razor sharp... Wiley always has a tendecy to sometimes fall a bit off beat and this was definitely apparent... plus, for Esiboy, Gangsters, and at least a couple other tunes, he rapped on top of the VOCAL versions, which i think was really weak and unexcusable... i am curious as to what his reasoning was, i mean, he MUST have the instrumentals and it's not like Gangsters is a particually demanding tune to rap...

to close out, he spat over Marijuana refix (i think they were switching computers or something) and then announced the last track... everyone yelled for What You Call it? and Wiley heard them, telling the dude manning the laptop "we haven't done Igloo..." after a false start, traded bars with Zinc Larnyx, who sounded better with Wiley next to him (tho he gets the gasface for selling his CD's to the front row while Wiley was perfor ming... c'mon dude, have some class....)

all in all, Wiley put on a long, solid set, tho i think he would have benefitted from a DJ and some occasionall pauses to catch his breath... and the attendence really made me question is anyone gives a damn about grime in NYC these days...

11/2/07 "Birds of Fire" by Mahavishu is killing me lately...

7/8/07 here is a quick psych/rock mix I did for a guy at work... enjoy... tracklist is:

i walk on gilded splinters- marsha hunt
funky dollar bill- funkadelic
1200 miles- flaming ember
ezy reader- jimi hendrix
poopsie- scrap iron
I want you right now- mc5
popcorn- ike and tina turner
runaway people- dyke and the blazers
walk on the water- the gollywogs
tango whiskeyman- can
familiar reality- dr john
you keep me hangin’ on- the box tops
river deep, mountain high- bob seger system
sweet box- slade
dynamite- mud
combination- aerosmith
memo from turner- mick jagger
evil- howlin’ wolf
long burn the fire- mer-da
le temps de l’amour- les classels
desperado- alice cooper

the Pure Fire summer mix is done and can be copped at the applecore store. I am pretty big on this mix, I think we really killed it... a solid mix of grime, dubstep, dancehall, hip hop, electro and assorted headtrips... also, my french music blog, tete carre, has been updated lately, so get yr frog on...

oh, and quicky top 5:

1. beggin'- timebox ...great funky rock/nothern soul thing that apparently has been remixed and revived in time for summer, the remix is good but i can't say it's better than this...

2. truz n vogues- gucci crew II ...big thanks to Papawheelie for schooling me on this... he is indeed the miami bass historian

3. rain 2000- sultana ...i only knew the remake by megaton from 1975, the OG from 73 is pretty amazing, interesting how nyc DJ culture was probably responsable for this song getting recut two years later, as the original was definitely NOT a hit in the US...

4. plastic gangsters- the 4 skins ...me and reaganomics really want to do some sort of grime/oi mix, doubt we'll ever do it...

5. axiom EP- durrty goodz ...amazingly good, why so good i'll buy a CD... but, yeah, the tightest grime release in a while...

6/3/07 i am djing this thursday june 7th at Psychedelic Perversions, a psych (duh) night held by jen black and rebecca ross at daddy's in greenpoint, on Graham Ave. bet. Frost & Richardson... 10pm-3ish, i guess. i am psyched (doh) to break out some dusty old drugged out records and old Red Light favorites. expect lysergic madness... i'll def. play some french stuff, like Bridget Fontaine and Alpes, as well as some Robert Charlebois stuff that is a freak fest... and naturally a lot of fuzzed out funk...

5/1/07 alot going on... djed at rubulad for 6 hours with Small Change on friday April 20. So much fun. Went from Howlin' Wolf to Funkadelic to Wiley to Kelis to ESG... just tearing it up. The best crowd in the city to play to. Heads from Phast Phreddie to Zack Shadetek were digging it. Definitely one of those moments that reminds me why I live in NYC. Then last friday was the 2nd Funkworthy Soundclash, this time versus Dave Q and Dubwars. It was a great night and Dubwars did win in the end, tho much respect for Funkworthy for playing Eskimo back to back with Igloo (wiley tunes, both instrumentals), something I have never done in front of that many people... anyways, it was a great night and it made the red sox victory over the yankees that much richer. and yo, who knew they'd win sunday, too...

anyways, Pure Fire has moved to APT, on the west side. we are there tonight, Tuesday May 1st, with special guest DJ Rupture and an open bar from 9-10. Check our myspace for more info...

OK, here it is, my favorite Tonic story ever. I rarely ever write anything personal here ever, but a few years back, I wrote about meeting Springa’s (lead singer of Boston H/C legends SS Decontrol) high school girlfriend at the Model Café in Allston, MA, where she regaled me with stories that, um, contradicted the straight edge lyrics of SSD. Add to this the stories Neil Sugarman has told me as well as those of my friend Mark Francis who grew up in the same neighborhood as Springa in Quincy and I am a walking encyclopedia of Springa folklore.

Anyways, so I got off work and hopped a cab down to Tonic to see the Dub Wars event, put on by Dave Q. Loafah and Mala (who showed up at the Pure Fire/Funkworthy Soundclash the night previous) as well as Joe Nice with Sgt. Pokes and Juakali on the mic. Anyways, I get there and see Pure Fire partner NRON politicking with DJ Rupture. I followed them downstairs, going to snag a beer. On my way to the fridge, Joe, the resident janitor/mayor of the L.E.S. calls out to me “Hey Pete, this boy is from Boston, too!” Walking over, I see the dude Joe is talking about. Hmmmm, wait, is it? “Where you frum?” he asks. “Newton” I reply. Playing it to the hilt, Springa replies “I’m frum Southie.” I extend my hand and say “Peter”, and he shakes and says “Springa.” I couldn’t help myself. “Oh shit, I thought that was you!” I drank a few beers with him and his boys (one of the guys from that band Vietnam, I think) and told him Springa stories, like the above (and below) mentioned story of meeting his high school girlfriend. He was happy to have someone else confirm the more noteworthy and ridiculous aspects of his behavior. Having been in that position myself, I was more than happy to oblige. He was definitely a cool dude and definitely lived up to his reputation in Boston as the ultimate rock dude/rock and roll ligger. Though the night did sort of lose the plot when Springa told me he had a 63 song rock opera ready to go. It was kinda like a fart in church, where afterwards there is embarrassed silence and no one knows quite what to say, including his rock dude buddies. Apparently his plan is to license some SSD material to a label in exchange for them putting out his rock opera. More power to him, I say. In my book, dude is a legend, as despite the fact that they broke up when I was 8, SSD was the soundtrack to my adolescence.

Anyways, after a few beers, I went upstairs to catch the dubstep the rock guys had been ridiculing. Mala and Loefah were playing some vicious stuff and it was definitely cool to hear it with Moldy, a fellow New Englander, who basically saved me the effort of trainspotting, as he knew every track they were playing. It was just a great time. I talked to Don, the bartender, and he confirmed my hunch that he was the one who got Springa down there. Apparently the guys Springa was hanging with were friends of Don’s, so he told them to bring Springa down. Definitely a good look, as I never would have guessed in a million years that I would meet Springa in a dubstep event. It felt like my entire life had wrapped around into one big crazy coherent quilt of counterculture. Many beers later, I had a good talk with Loefah, who is very much a normal South London dude. He tried to call me on some shit about my London knowledge which was funny, because I wasn’t taking it. Check the picture (by Hera):

He was incredibly psyched to meet DJ Abstract, a/k/a Alex Posell, former Pure Fire bartender. It was a very cool scene to see. Alex released some very seminal dubstep stuff a few years back during a sojourn in London. One song is on the new Tempa “Roots of Dubstep” comp. I asked him if anyone had introduced him to Mala or Loefah. He said no, and I couldn’t help myself. I am glad I did. Loefah was fucking thrilled to meet him, enthusing over his work, saying how it had been a huge influence on him, something that had showed him how things should be, etc. It was definitely a cool moment to eavesdrop on. So, that’s it. That was my best night at Tonic and definitely a night I can’t see happening anywhere else.

4/7/07 long time, no update. much has happened. i admit, myspace has made me update this less. anyways, Monday is the last Pure Fire ever at Tonic, as Tonic is closing on Friday. A real drag. Tonic was just one of those places that made NYC special to me, kind of like The Foundry did for London a few years back... i had a lot of good nights in the basement there; djing, drinking, dancing (a rare occurance for me, but i remember when Vex'd played there at the Bunker, I was cutting a rug)... anyways, please come by tomorrow and say goodbye to one the last truly chill spots in manhattan...

SUBTONIC FAREWELL PARTY
Tonic (upstairs) 107 Norfolk
Mon. April 9th, 2007
10 - 4
$5

Pure Fire and Broklyn Beats Records invite you to a SubTonic Farewell Party commemorating all the good times we have had playing in SubTonic. This is an open call for all denizens from SubTonic's illustrious past to come down and play one last time. There will be a sign-up sheet for 5 -10 min. slots for you to plug and play or DJ one last handful of vinyl / bytes...

For all of the years that SubTonic has provided us a wonderful locale for hosting and attending experimental music, it's our turn to say thank you and goodbye! With SubTonic previously closed, this party will be hosted upstairs at Tonic, but SubTonic will be listening! There will be a DJ set-up, extra tables and a mackie mixer provided. Plan to keep it short and sweet. Sign-up will be at the door with the party started at roughly 10 after the early show. Spread the word!

oh, and Trim, who used to be in Roll Deep, is killing it lately. His new style is very lyrical, strange and unique, yet still grimey. Definitely pushing the MC style of grime forward. In a just world, he'd be the next Roots Manuva...

2/1/07 this week at Pure Fire, it's Small Change, playing all sorts of gems from across the board, as he's known to do... Pure Fire is at Tonic, 107 Norfolk St, L.E.S, NY, NY...

also, there's a soundclash coming up:

1/19/07  haven't updated in a while, the holidays were a whirlwind.  I've started contributing to Emcee Gabe's hip hop blog at www.daftcrunk.com.  My french music blog is rolling, over at www.tetecarre.blogspot.com.  Pure Fire has  been rolling on. Thanks to DJ Rupture, Magabo, Funkworhty,  High Priest, Leftenant, and all other recent guests.  This Weds, Jan 24, is myself and Reaganomics birthday party and we are having a pile of DJ's guesting, playing everything from grime to death metal, so check it.
I recently spun at Love, in a night my man Small Change curated, I have to to say, it was amazing. That place is like the disco museum. Monitors better than most places systems, a rotary mixer,  turntables on springs with ill needles, and a dj booth that looks like mission control.  What can i say, I'm smitten.

Belated top 5:

1.  yeah yeah (D. Ramirez vocal mix)- Bodyrox  (extremely obnoxious hipster vocal track by a Lady Soveriegn wannabe that I can't help but love... when i was in London, the instrumental  version was the hit of the moment. i heard it on the radio from passing cars and at grime shows...

2.  night life- elvis presley    ...w/ sick fuzz guitar and a nice groove, a hidden gem on a crappy looking late 60's soundtrack LP...

3.  pagliaro- michel pagliaro   ...also know as "ayala red" by the mighty, this is a nice disco/rock number in the vein of Barrabas and The Congas; ie. Santana influenced percussive chanting with guitars...

4.  ay chico- pitbull  ...this acapella is fun at +6...

5. 25 lighters- DJ DMD    ...great texas rap from 1998...

12/12/06 a whole lotta news going on... first much respect for the Funkworthy Fm people, who have now had 2 shows with the Pure Fire Crew on the bill... the first being a soundclash where they even had the following dub made: Sad For You . It's basically the greatest thing ever, a custem dubplate specifically dissing me and reaganomics, with plenty of jabs about how we don't get any pussy, etc, etc, etc... Being that I am sort of the Lane Meyer ("Somebody threw away a perfectly good whiteboy!") of NYC djing, I would actually rather have a song dissing me than one big upping me... so, there it is...

I also started a blog, specifically about french music... peep it here.

10/28/06 while in london, in addition to a big ol' pile of records, i got the new ruff sqwad CD, Guns N Roses Vol 2. A couple things jumped out instantly... firstly, everyone in ruff sqwad has really gotten better at what they do the past few years, like the beats are tighter and the flows are much improved, it's no longer just tinchy stryder and some other dudes... this is definitely apparent on from the first song, "Xtra." The instrumental of this has been out for a while and was vocaled earlier by God's Gift, as the fantastic "Only God Know's What I've Done". that version never came out in any form, besides mp3, due to disputes between Gift and Ruff Sqwad. Ruff Sqwad have taken their beat back, in every sense of the phrase... as good as God's Gift's version was, this buries it... the mc's are bobbing and weaving, attacking ("Bombaye!") relentlessly, trading off bars in 2's and 4's in a way hip hop forgot about a long time ago...

it's the grime version of Wu Tang's "Protect Ya Neck", and like that track, it inspires the same repeat listens in order to get yourself familiar with all these voices in so little time... just as Method Man and ODB were (to me) the cats in Wu Tang you noticed first and then it took repeated listenings to differentiate between, say Inspectah Deck and Raekwon (may the Gods forgive me...), Tinchy Stryder (his vocal tone and flow are just unmistakeable) and Slix ("Down, Down, Down") pop out when you hear Ruff Sqwad, but upon further listens, each member stands on his own... but, more importantly, they sound so great together, the type of vocal unity that can only come from people who spend ALOT of time around each other (and why the later Wu Tang stuff never had the same raw exitement of the first LP; they weren't living with each other anymore, and no matter how many houses they rented in the Hollywood Hills to hang together, they never recaptured that vibe...). I won't even bother hoping Ruff Swqad retain that; after all one can't resist the temptation of sucesss without being succesful first...

10/27/06 quicky psych mix i did available here, some gems for sure...

10/25/06 just back from 2 weeks in London, where i had a great time... here are two pics from Dirty Canvas, where I spun at... here is the editor of I-D, working the merch table with plenty of Pure Fire products on display...

and here is half of my head on the left hand side of the picture watching the Movement perform...

9/19/06

the most ridiculous yet natural dirtbag marriage ever: the entire Rambo First Blood movie edited down to 7 minutes and then scored with "Am I Evil" by Metallica (all done by a guy called "conservativesunite" (thus explaining why the "how dare they call us babykillers" speech is highlighted by a drop out...))...

9/29/06 Jay Z spitting on top of the Foward riddim live in London last night... sick...

9/16/06 thanks to Dave Q and Daniel Lion I for wrecking it last week at Pure Fire... I think my fillings are loose... Turntable Lab is now selling the Pure Fire Summer mix... cop one here... seeing G. Gordon Liddy on Fear Factor was some of the best television I've ever seen. Made me wanna climb up a tree during a thunder storm... tho, to be fair his competition was Willis from Different Strokes...

Top 5:

Robert Charlebois- s/t (Gamma)
Wiley- Tunnel Vision Vols. 1 & 2
Jacques Dutronc- Restons Francais, Soyons Gaulois
Krokodil- Blue Flashing Circle
Eddie Kirkland- The Hawg (just saw him at a random beach bar down in Florida, but that's a story for another time...)

2. brooklyn anthem- team shadetek (much respect. a great record.)

3. johnny was a bad boy- wiley (really nice to hear Wiley over other people's beats that still compliment his style. a nice thing, again, that mixes great with dubstep. slow n heavy.)

4. sou funk EP- various artists (nice baile funk vinyl comp with a nice mix of styles)

5. 5. Slew Dem Ft Scorcher & Wiley - Way Down Da Road

in other news, Cx Kidtronik killed at Pure Fire this week. I see absolutely no reason why this dude should not be the next Spank Rock/M.I.A. phenom...

in fact, a big thanks to all the guests in the since October, all of which are insanely talented.

4/27/06 random babble time. i am very excited about the Ricardo Mayorga/Oscar De La Hoya fight next month... it should be well worth watching... first of all these are two dudes who can't afford to lose! Mayorga has lost to Corey Spinks and Felix Trinidad, De La Hoya to Bernard Hopkins... they're both a loss away from retirement (or a ungraceful decline...) secondly, because it's always interesting to see how De La Hoya fights a puncher (as opposed to a boxer)... and thirdly because Mayorga has a taste for the pre-fight quip that may be better than Tyson in his prime. No one knows how to dish out a lowblow re: one's mother, wife, race, or guts the way Mayorga can. Dude plays the dozens with a rusty razorblade... While he may lack the bitter poetry of classic Tyson, Mayorga can somehow elevate profane insults to an artform. Plus, he's just nasty in the ring, a streetfighter on a big street...

4/13/06 top 5:
1. fishscales- ghostface (whole LP)
2. pussy got ya hooked- three 6 mafia
3. under mi sensei- barrington levy
4. eskiboy- wiley
5. double negative- subway sect

tagteaming w/ my homey Small Change at a very cool loft party this Saturday near my house in Bushwick. Very crazy space, with lots of installations... lotta dj's and performers, including Beans from Antipop... should be fun... info here:
http://www.wildwildbrooklyn.com/battle/

3/29/06 top 5:
1. Rainbow- Gene Chandler
2. Rainbow- Gene Chandler
3. Rainbow- Gene Chandler
4. Rainbow- Gene Chandler
5. Tical- Method Man

3/28/06 this is a treat for any disco fans out there. here is a recording of my friend chris's (a/k/a DJ Baron of the soulpusher party) father DJ Raunchy Rich, spinning at Playlounge in Manhattan in the Fall of 1974. Very very very cool stuff. My favorite part is when he does the (relatively) quick cut from the Lyn Collins version of "Think" into the Soul Searchers' version. Smoking!

3/27/06

top 5:

1. I Think They Like Me- Dem Franchise Boys (D'explicit remix) ...just an amazing record, a grime remix of a snap track. crossovers like this is what inspired Pure Fire.

2. Tippin'- Tinchy Stryder and Dillusion ...from Tinchy's mix CD, "I'm Back U Know", which is pretty much more like an album than a mixtape, as the majority of the beats are either original to this CD or from withim his family (ruff sqwad and roll deep) . Anyways, this is the one US cover, yep, "Still Tippin'" by Mike Jones. Now, if only Plasticman would press his version of this on wax...

3. Degenerate-Vex'd (entire LP) ...took me months to find this in the US, distribution here for this has sucked. well worth the weight. people call it dubstep, but it's definitely on it's own planet.

4. Back Your Talk-Young Guns- ...the rapping is nothing special, but at this point, d'explicit can make ANYONE sound hot...

5. Tell Me When To Go- E-40 and Keak da Sneak. ...Spent all day Saturday trying to find a non-bootleg/whitelabel copy of this in NYC. Failed miserably. People talk about this like it's some weird regional Bay Area record, but it's produced by Lil Jon for christ's sake. I think this will blow up, but I'm usually wrong about stuff like that. I'll be playing it, I'll tell you that much!

3/17/06 jesus, what a bad dream... site down for 3 months... and so much has happened... let's see, finally joined myspace for one... been spinning lots of great parties, including one at my house that can be seen here (tho, i think by this point in the evening i was downstairs in my room just smoking blizzes and drinking top shelf tequila with my boys... i hate crowds...) ...had a great record release party at Pure Fire for Small Change's Mix CD "Soundclash" (which is a dope as fuck mix of dancehall (from the early 80's digital days to the present), dub, ragga jungle, classic ska and rocksteady and much more) courtesy of the folks at freenyc.net who lined up the beer sponsership, did some great flyers, recorded the sets, and just were basically fucking superheros. Hats off to them.

And, yes, the sets were recorded. To listen to them, peep it here. There are two sets of myself and Crito tagteaming. It was a lot of fun.

top 5 is:

1. Gangsters- Wiley
2. Guns N Roses- Roll Deep and Ruff Squad
3. War- Fumin
4. Gotta Man- Doctor and Davinche
5. Kryptonite- Purple Ribbon All Stars

1/02/06 playlist= side 2 of "surf's up" by the beach boys... been playing the hell out of this... stone cold classic... also, the entire Lil' Wayne LP is fucking amazing... he sounds just like Jay Z, but so what!

12/29/05 STILL have the flu... much thanks to Kid Chameleon for spinning at Pure Fire this week, and turning me onto some good dubstep/grime i hadn't heard before. I am spinning New Year's Eve at Iona's in W'Burg, on the corner of Grand and Bedford, one of the first bars in the neighborhood, nice spot. expect a little of everything.

Here's another video, "what we do"- kray twinz feat. Twista, Lethal B, and Gappy Ranks ...sorta a desi/grime/hip hop/ragga crossover.... uh, yeah... anyways the kray twinz are two uk dudes of indian descent, who claim to be the real producers of that Punjabi MC track with jay z a few years back, like they sold him the beat or something... this track is a nice hip hop club tune, with Twista (yunno the world's fastest MC Tongue Twista, aka Mr. Slow Jamz???) on it... could concievably cross over, as this sounds like a US hip hop song, more or less.

top 5

1. sexomatic- bar kays
2. sexasonic- vernon burch
3. sexologie- rita
4. sexologie- danyel gerard
5. sexy sexy sexy- james brown

12/26/05 lotta stuff has happened... had a great weekend in montreal, doing the town up and record shopping with DJ's Soulcracker and Inbetween. I may have to finally make a french language garage/psych mix CD. Also, thanks to Steve Shakwell and Ben Manzone, and Inbetween for having me guest at their weekend gigs at Skinny and Lolita on the ol' L.E.S. Good times were had. Then, I had the flu for a week... boy, was that fun. I am almost better and looking forward to the new year. more later.

12/4/05 this week at Pure Fire, our guest is OCDJ from WFMU. Expect everything from dancehall to ghettotech. OCDJ's show kills it, recently he had Lady Soveriegn's tour DJ, DJ Frampster on and he killed it with a grime set...

oh, and some grime stuff for the masses. Jammer's Murkel Man Outburst video is completely bonkers. He's the grime superhero and he makes MC's look like Urkel... also, here's an mp3 of one of Wiley's famous Eskimo Dance from a few years back ("Doing 'I Luv U' in person, Dizzee Rascal!!!") that's half radio ads for the show, and then half of the show. Rowdy as all hell and amazing to hear, here in the land of radio suckdom...

12/2/05 Top 5:

1. Galang- M.I.A. (Dave Kelly remix feat. Cham)
2. Pull up the People- M.I.A. (D'Explicit remix)
3. Pulled Up- Nron and Miked
4. Standing in the Way of Control- The Gossip
5. Funky Like a Train- The Equals

had some fun spinning lately, the WNYU thing was a lot of fun, hopefully have audio up soon. Filled in for Mr. Finewine at his Downtown Soulville night at Botanica last week, as well as spun a great Blackkat party in Bed Stuy, playing a Pure Fire set of grime, crunk, reggaeton, dancehall, and more... always fun to play in an alternative space with a good sound system...

11/15/05 this friday, November 18, I am spinning on WNYU radio from 10:30pm-1am EST, on the "Rotations" show. You can find listening links here. I'll be doing a Pure Fire set of grime, crunk, dancehall, reggaeton and who knows what else...

11/12/05 my record is DONE! yes, after months (years?) of delays, the Crossvader EP "Doom on You" is finished. Updated Crossvader info coming here soon, as well as purchasing information. For now, go to the Crossvader page under "stuff" and click on the boy to hear a pre-release version of "I'm Feeling Sad".

8/14/05 saw Roll Deep at Knitting Factory on Friday and the East River Ampitheatre on Sunday. Totally sick. While I am not a blogger, I will say it lived up to all my artificially raised expectations I had from listening to this shit obsessively for the last year or so. For those who care, it was Wiley, Flo Dan, Trim, Scratchy, and Karnage. They played for about 90 minutes at Knitting Factory. They mostly rapped over in-house tracks (i.e. Wiley, Danny Weed productions) but they did their last tune over 'Golly Gosh" by Sticky. They put out alot of energy, especially Flo Dan, who when he really gets going raises the temperature in the room a few degrees. The highlight of the night to me was seeing Wiley rap over Eskimo, one of those moments that seems historical and magical, if your world view is as messed up as mine...

7/28/05 Friday August 5th, I'm doing a grime/crunk/ghettotech/miami bass/jungle/ragga night at Rocky's in Williamsburg.

DJ's are: Papawheelie, Criterion, Catchdubs, Shakey, and Reaganomics.

cover is 4 bucks. This will a SICK night of loud, fucked up, dance music.

Rocky's is at 351 Kent Ave (@S. 5th). Music starts at 9pm.

7/7/05 very fun night coming up. Bands n stuff and me spinning soul. Funnily enough, this will be the second time in a few months I've spun at a 33hz show. If you like Hall and Oates, Duran Duran, later Morris Day and the Time, and later Kid Creole , you'll love them. If all of that sounds repulsive, you'll hate them...i'll be spinning hard soul and funk to get the dance party started.

7/4/05 lotta stuff... first of all, i've scaled Red Light back to a monthly, as after two years of DJing and scheduling a weekly, dammit people I'm tired... also no more Flipper at Belly. Thanks to all my red light guests and to DJ Gilles, Papawheelie, Steve Shakewell, Reagonomics, and Benguin for guesting at Flipper. It was fun, but the owners want monthlys in there instead of weeklys. Eh, have fun with your Ipod DJ's...speaking of R.I.P. to good nights, Sam Sever is no longer doing tuesdays at Don Hill's due to Don canceling his Cold Crush night on the day of...

I had a good time a few weeks back playing grime at Subtonic with Crito and Drop the Lime... those breakcore cats like their crunk and reggaeton, too... And they crank the system good and loud. Oh, and a big thank you to the Western Massachusetts people who showed Crito and myself much hospitality a few weeks back on our one day sojourn to the happy valley. Got some great records out there like the first Tuxedo Moon 7" for 3.50 and a big stack of 50's and 60's country, including some hard to find Hank Williams records for 2 bucks each... oh, and the Outlets LP, which is much better than a lot of old Boston rockers have led me to believe...

6/5/05 this Weds., June 8th, my guest at Belly is Steve ShakeWell. Expect alot of electrodisco stuff. 155 Rivington, 9pm-2am.

5/30/05 couple of things... tuesday May 31st, i am again spinning at Sam Sever's night at Don Hill's... performers are:
BOBBY DELICIOUS 10:30
FRO MAGNUM MAN 9:30
DIVEST 8:30
from what i hear, Bobby Delicious is a friend of the Bad Brains from upstate NY (where they now reside...)... these nights are always fun and it's a blast for me to hear my music LOUD on the Don Hill's sound system...

my guest this week at Belly on Wednesday is Papawheelie Joe, famed Miami Bass historian, Alldisco resident DJ, all around electro nerd... expect him to thoroughly school me on all things drum machine related... Flipper at Belly, 155 Rivington, Weds, 9pm-2am...

5/24/05 nothing that interesting to report... i spun at Rothko, the "it" spot de jour... it was underwhelming... DJ Gilles is leaving for France on Memorial Day... i'd like to smoke an L with Dizzee Rascal while listening to "Oh" by Ciara featuring Ludacris...

5/10/05 my grime mix "totally fucked" is available for sale at Other Music in NYC, or directly from me. It's a mix of grime, crunk, dancehall, drum n bass, reggaeton, and more... yes, it's a small world after all and for some reason, we're all singing the same uptemp, angry song...

5/6/05 wednesday at Belly, Flipper is going electro. Yup, nothing but drum machines from LL Cool J to Depeche Mode... 808 galore... to help me out on the more new wave side of things, it's my friend DJ Gilles of Decadanse fame... catch him before he leaves for Europe to spin at big smelly festivals...
Weds, may 11, 9pm-2am, 155 Rivington btwn Clinton and Suffolk...

5/5/05 this tuesday, May 10th, Peter Gunn and Flex Unger are doing the DJing and trumpet thing (I'll play some hip hop, funk, and dub records and Flex will rock trumpet over them...) at Sam Sever's night, "Better Days" at Don Hill's. The line is as follows:

BLESSTENATION
MR. MET (of Brooklyn Academy)
MONSTAR ISLAND CZARS (from the first MF Doom record!)
WHATZISFACE & SUBWAY STILES
TRAIN 94

Special Guests DJ PETER GUNN & FLEX UNGER with some dusty ass dub!

this should be pretty sick. I saw Monster Island Czars open for MF Doom at Knitting Factory 4 or 5 years ago and they were nasty. I've heard good things about Blesstenation... cost of admission is 10 bones... doors at 8, we'll probably start close to then and then do our thing between acts... click here for info...

4/27/05 Attention hipsters, DJ's, A&R's, publicists, etc... reggaeton is officially no longer edgey... last night while Djing, a 50 year old Long Island housewifey stretchpants wearing type asked me for 50 cent. When I replied in the negative, she asked for reggaeton (Admitadly, she mangled the pronunciation). So, for anyone rocking Don Omar and Tego because it gives them cred, give it up because Murial and Esther are pumping it in their SUV.

4/19/05 many things this week. Belly on Weds., Good World on Thurs., Riingo at the Hotel Alex (at 45th and 3rd) on Friday from 6pm to midnight. Riingo is a slick lounge, drinks are expensive, be warned. But Flex Unger will be playing his trumpet along with the records.

Saturday, it's Red Light, and then I'm rushing over to Rubulad to close out the night with a set of grime (with some dancehall, crunk, and jungle mixed in). I'll be playing from about 3:30 til 6am. Come by late, it will be sick. Info is below:

4/10/05 coming up this week: Weds. it's Flipper at Belly (155 Rivington, LES) where it'll be funk, rock and more... expect dusty and moldy 45's from my parent's basement. Thursday, I'm at Lucky Cat (245 Grand St. in W'Burg.) where I'll be Djing for the Updown Originals. I Djed for these guys before when they played at The 5 Spot in Fort Greene. They are a really sick soul/funk band in the Daptone style (the guitarist plays in the Sugarman 3 and the other guys have played in other Daptone projects) and well worth checking out. Cover is $5, which is well worth it. Saturday, my guest at Red Light is Crito from Broklyn Beats. I'm getting more and more into the stuff they put out and breakcore in general. Love it or hate it, you have to admit you haven't heard it before. Also, I am finally going to be playing some grime out in the near future, so stay tuned!

4/5/05

Once I met a woman at the Model Cafe in Allston, MA who commented on my SSD T-shirt: "Oh My God!, that was my old boyfriend's band!" She said she used to date Springa in high school. I asked her what he was like. She said he was crazy, that he liked to pull up to the Quincy communter rail station when everyone was coming home from work and stand on top of his car and play air guitar to AC/DC. I thought that was funny. Then I asked her if it true that he was straight edge? She looked at me and cackled, "Yeah, straight edge when he was cuttin' the lines!".       Hmmmmmm... I admit, my younger self was taken aback. Although I personally never subscribed to the straight edge lifestyle in any way (well, I never got laid if that counts...) I drew considerable strength from the convictions (and overt self righteousness) from those who did.
"Are you serious", I asked, "'Cause I read in an interview that he said when the band was together being straight was the best part of his life and all they did was skateboard and drink Mountain Dew..."
Her face lit up and she burst out, "Yeah, mixed with Vodka, we called them Voodoos! I taught him to make those!"
Another childhood ideal bites the dust... (don't even get me started about the time Choke offered me a free haircut on Newbury St. I accepted, the girls I was with declined his offer of a free coloring)

3/01/05 "Now I'm living out my life in the corner, trying to console myself with the stupid, useless excuse that only an intelligent man cannot turn himself into anything, that only a fool can make anything he wants out of himself." - Dostoyesvsky.

With that in mind, Crossvader vinyl is getting ready to be mastered...

2/20/05 thanks to everyone who gave me feedback on the grime CD. With that in mind, I have done a new one, consisting of a mix of grime, crunk, ragga, and more. It's 10 bucks including shipping. Cover art is below. E-mail me at address above if interested.

12/10/04 this monday, december 13 from noon-2pm, i will be guesting on Mark Francis' radio show on WMBR: Cambridge, Massachusetts. The show is "Lost and Found", an oldies show of sorts I used to listen to in high school while driving to McDonald's for lunch. I'll be dusting off alot of nice rock and soul stuff. You can listen here. I don't think they have archives, so catch it while it happens, office drones!

12/09/04 oh look, it's a two year old article from the Boston Globe that mentions me... wow
oh, and for those random people from (i'm guessing) europe googling me to find out what the sample is for "my guitar" by ghostface... it's by Jimmy Ponder... now go on ebay and buy me a copy...

7/25/04 this week at Red Light, my guest is DJ Sims from the Southside Lounge's sister bar, Lotus. Expect an epic battle of the sexes on the 1's and 2's, where there can be no victor, except for you, the lovely listening public. Saturday, July 31... 41 Broadway, Bucktown... be there.

7/11/04 the Ghostface mix CD is finished. Please e-mail if you'd like a copy. It's 80 minutes of Ghostface Killah, the songs he samples, etc etc etc... It's got lots of unreleased white label stuff as well... It puts Ghostface in context with the history of hip hop, AND it rocks the party...

5/5/04 I knew it!!! from the Wu tang website, an account of Ghostface live in NYC two weeks back.

Later the Ironman called for the stage to be covered in red light so he could perform "Holla." "I'm from a place where fish was made," he rapped, setting up his dramatics. Ghost began snapping his fingers and slowly winding his hips like a modern-day Marvin Gaye. He dropped to his knees on the last verse before rising back to his feet and dancing.

Read the Ghostface manifesto below and notice the similarities...

4/22/04

Brave Sabine Dardenne has vowed to face down the monster who kept her captive as a child sex slave. She was just 12 years old when Marc Dutroux kidnapped her as she cycled to school.

He took her to a filthy, makeshift dungeon in his cellar where she was held for 80 days.

Half-starved, she was repeatedly raped and chained by the neck so she could not escape.

Now aged 20, Sabine will be the star witness at Dutroux's trial, which starts on Monday.

She said: 'I've waited eight years for this moment. I want to look him in the eyes and show he didn't destroy me.'

4/8/04 This week at Red Light it's Ghostface Killah night! yes, a tribute to Ghostface Killah... 6 hours of Ghostface and the songs he samples... rare white label and mixtape joints... plus free Ziti! (b/c as Ghost sez, his "rhymes are like ziti"...)

3/31/04 This week at Red Light, it's a throwback (in Peter Gunn history)... yes, it's the Twisted Ones, Arthur and, in from Berlin, Fitz... as well as Erik and Etain from Mighty Robot.... check it suckers!

3/21/04 Cornell Woolrich on why he wrote:

"I was only trying to cheat death. I was only trying to surmount for a little while the darkness that all my life I surely knew was going to come rolling in on me some day and obliterate me."

3/16/04 OK, the Red Light Party is going to be off the whatever this Saturday, March 20... My guest will be Neal Sugarman, esteemed member of the Sugarman Three, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, and operator of Daptone Records . Something tells me Neal has a SICK record collection, so this should be an evening well worth attending... there are other interesting things planned in Red Light land, so stay tuned.

Also, a sound clip is up on the Cross Vader page...

3/11/04 Friend Flex Unger speaks after watching a documentry on hip hop... (a excerpt from a longer rant):

...well after seeing that the majority of rappers in this American rap thing and hearing that the main motivation of all these emcees was money and a dream home for their mom and real estate and a dog food line and a triva board game, i thought, wow money is the main motivation of the "rap game" (ps that term is soooooo gay)... Practical things to make money which I totally understand and am in no way knocking.

...however, I am a fan of music and authenticity, tradition, and quality and it makes me sad to see things in hip hop suffer because of practicality.
It also occured to me that most emcee's goals seemed to be owning a home and getting out of the rap thing and moving on into something else, like acting or making some dumb product. i think all these rappers should be selling amway or become stock brokers.

Where are the Ian Mckays of rap?

Where are the punk rock ideals of "dont be a fuckin sellout?"

where is the spirit of sun ra in rap?

what ever happened to making music for the love of music first and putting the material and fame second?

I had to listen to fats navaro to go to sleep after watching this to remember that black music is made be tortured geniuses, not people with the same views and goals in life as my parents and fellow Bay Ridge Italian American peers (yes i think my dad and snoop would see eye to eye in many ways) (there both fans of the cadillac and my dad thinks money solves all problems (also doesnt have any in the grand scheme of things like most emcees)) and it made me think 2 things:

one: I wonder how many players in the hey day of bee bop had the same view on the "bop game" gaining them real estate that the rappers of today have
and

two: what would happen if we could take some of these rappers and sit them down and make them listen to things like bop and avant garde jazz and unpractical music that is released with no expectation of sales what would their opinions be?

2/20/04 wowsa wowsa wowsa... Peter Gunn is spinning 3 times next week... if you don't live in NYC, move there now... first, on Thursday, Feb. 26, I am spinning at the closing of the Terrible Toy Fair II at CB's Gallery... this was a really great show that got alot of positive press, so say you saw it before it's too late... I'll be spinning childish music (again) and classic UK punk... Friday, Feb 27th, I am spinning at that scenster palace, Piano's, on the lower east side... if you know where it is, you must already be much cooler than me (and perhaps you could give me directions?)... I'm planning to school the hipster finks w/ a dark jamaican influenced set of dub, dancehall, ragga jungle, and dancehall hip hop...

expect to hear:

R.I.P.- Remarc
Heavy Manners- Prince Far I
Eyes a Bleed- Bounty Killer (RZA Remix feat. Masta Killa)
Dwayne- Red Rat
Fire- Prinza feat. Demolition Man
Lock Off- Elephant Man (over Nothin' by N.O.R.E.)
Shoot to Kill- Mad Lion

then Saturday the 28, is Red Light time at the Southside Lounge in Williamsburg, with special guest Monkey Man... we'll throw down funky psych stuff like "Fish, Chips, and Sweat" by Funkadelic (dope B-side)...

1/29/04 lots of neat things coming up... This Saturday Jan. 31, I welcome Ms. K and her insane soul 45 collection to the Red Light Party... and next Thurs., i'm spinning at the opening for the Terrible Toy Fair at CBGB's Gallery ... I'm going to try to spin childish music... everything from Sesame Street records to The Residents...

1/20/04 ok, the graphics page is fixed, and the images are now normal sized (more or less)... this Saturday, Jan. 24th, come help Peter Gunn celebrate his birthday at The Southside Lounge... no presents needed, just bring your funky self (or funky doppleganger)... come before 2am and I may be coherent... actually if anyone wants to get me a present, I am jonesing for a copy of the first Cro-Mags LP on vinyl... I'd also dig the 45 of "Pretty Ballerina" by the Left Banke...

1/4/04 a very cool night this week at the Southside Lounge... Peter Gunn, Partick Duckcomb (Beauty Bar, etc), & DJ Shakewell play nothing but 12 inches from 1976-1981... super old school hip hop and the disco jams they're based on... P&P records, Enjoy records...Sat. Jan. 10... 41 Broadway, W'Burg, Brooklyn... Bounce, rock, skate, roll!!!!!!

12/29/03 ...more French guilt... as follows are the words of French Canadian/Indian Metis leader Louis Riel right before he was led from his cell to the gallows on November 16, 1885:

"How happy and content I am! I feel my heart will overflow with joy."

I'm not sure what all this means, but I'm sure it means something...

12/22/03
Tomorrow, Tuesday December 23, Peter Gunn is spinning at APT in NYC at DJ Small Change's Birthday Party. The event is titled "Golf" and there are going to be 20 DJ's each doing 15 minutes. I plan on spinning some French Canadian garage 45's... All the other DJ's are really varied, everyone from Phast Phreddie (LA punk rock writer from the 70's who now spins old r&b...) to Scratch Famous (dancehall DJ w/ Deadly Dragon Sound System) so it should be a cool night. APT is at 13st and 9th Ave.

12/16/03
This week at the Red Light Party, it's DJ Shakewell spinning 70's funk, latin, and more... check it! Saturday Dec. 20 @ 41 Broadway, W'Burg, Brooklyn, NY USA...

12/5/03
Why do french writers have such persecution complexes? Dig the ending of The Stranger by Camus:

"As if that blind rage had washed me clean, rid me of hope; for the first time, in that night alive with signs and stars, I opened myself to the gentle indifference of the world. Finding it so much like myself-so like a brother, really-I felt that I had been happy and that I was happy again. For everything to be consumated, for me to feel less alone, I had only to wish that there be a large crowd of spectators the day of my execution and that they greet me with cries of hate."

Ouch! say it aint so, Al... reading that made think of A Season in Hell by Rimbaud, where upon the narrator refelcts in a similar vein:

"But orgies and the company of women were forbiddon me. Not even a companion. I saw myself before an angry mob, facing a firing squad, weeping miserably because they had not understood, and forgiving them!-Like Joan of Arc!-'Priests, teachers, masters, you are making a mistake in delivering me to justice. I have never been a Christian; I belong to the race which sang on the scaffold; I understand nothing of laws; I have no moral sense, I am an animal; you are making a mistake...'"

I have to say, I like both books very much, but there is a sense of self-pity running through them which i find a tad perverse...

12/2/03
Favorite Crunk Songs as of today are:
1. Tight Whips- 504 Boyz
2.Who you With- Lil' Jon and the Eastside Boyz
3. Tear da Club Up- Three Six Mafia
3.Uhh Oh- Lil' Jon and the Eastside Boyz
